You have decided that you are tired of getting calls that you didn’t ask for, and that you are tired of your number being passed around. Once it is out there, there may not be much you can do. However, when you have a brand new number in your hand, there are some simple things that you can do to try to ensure that your number is only in the hands of those you wish to have it.
The first move you should make is to put your number on the Do Not Call list. This is something that you can do with your landline number, but you can also do this when you have a cell. Though there is no national directory for cell numbers, they do fall into the hands of telemarketers on occasion. Putting your cell number on this list is a good move to be sure that no one calls you, or that you have recourse in the event that they do.
When you are getting your new number, find out what you have to do to be sure it is unlisted. When it comes to landline numbers, this is something that may cost you a bit of money, but it is well worth it. That means it should not show up in any type of phone directory online or in print. If your number is a cellular, this is not something you have to worry about. No such directory exists and there are currently no plans to make one. The idea for one was shot down so fast that it appears there may not be any more plans any time soon.
Smaller things you can do can be very effective as well. Never post your phone number online for any reason. With the exceptions of those in business, there is never a good reason to do this. If you must use your number for any type of form, make sure they protect your information and opt out of a calling list every single time. Never use your number on sweepstakes from companies you don’t know, and find out how to block your number on outgoing calls when calling someone who may add your number to a list.
